Is there a charge for unused keys?

Post by mandmdiet » Mon Jul 07, 2025 7:48 am

If I have a Customer API Key that I created and attached to an Open Dental instance that was in use in May, but the customer canceled their service and we do not use that key in June at all, will we incur a charge in June? Or does the Open Dental API charge only if traffic is sent across the wire using that key?

Just wondering if we have to be rigorous about disabling Open Dental keys when a client cancels their service with us.

Thank you, I couldn't find anyone asking or answering this question online anywhere. I apologize if this answer exists somewhere and I just couldn't find it.

Hello mandmdiet,

The fee for the API key is for the ability to access the database, it is not tied to actual usage. So if you just stop using a particular API key, or if you have very low usage, you will continue to be billed for it because the ability still exists to access the data. In order to stop being billed, you will need to disable the API key either through the Developer Portal or directly in the Open Dental database.

Thanks!
