Jordan, has there been any news on this topic and what a dental practice management software must do to be certified by the federal government?

We need to get eRx done ASAP. Our software can't be certified yet, but eRx is the first piece of the puzzle.

I went to a continuing ed on the topic a few days ago. The parameters that the federal government set to be a meaningful user and thus qualify for funds are basically impossibe for the average dentist to meet. Seems like nobody thought about dentists when they wrote this law.

This is a good example on how technology can be applied in different ways. The use of this kind of method in storing the health records of a patient will be helpful and can save money, time and energy in searching for a record of an old patient.

I have my doubts on the acceptance this will have among dentists. It looks like having access to the information will not be free for us providers. I think dentists will not have a good enough incentive to participate in this unless we are mandated by the federal government or the insurance companies to do so. In spite of this I think any software that wants to survive will need to be compliant.

There are rumors that The Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT (ONC) will publish guidelines for dental certification in mid 2011, we shall see.
