Microsoft Security Essentials or AVAST

I presently have MSE running on all my computers. I recently read that MSE is now considered weak on protection tests and Avast free version was recommended. I may switch over. Does anyone on the forum have a problem with Windows 7 Pro, Open Dental, IE 9 and Avast as the Antivirus program??
Thanks

I am using MSE in my computers. AV software is not going to safeguard against unsafe computing practices. Kind of like a gated community. My girls know to use office computers strictly for work. No unauthorized downloads/software installations, no visiting non-business sites. To me, MSE is fine with a strict computer use policy.
BTW, I would ditch IE9 for Firefox or Chrome. Or upgrade to IE 11.

I have seen AVAST block outgoing emails sent from Open Dental.

Invest in quality anti-malware/anti-virus software. AVG Free or Avast Free are not legal for commercial use, and should not be used in the workplace where accuracy and performance are essential.

I just finished reading the article thank you for the link
May I ask if you use ESET windows 8.1 ?
If not can you list what you have found to work with Open Dental? Thanks again

Thank you for the response. Which AV software does Open Dental recommend for its users?

I am using Kaspersky. I have not had any problems using it with OD.
I had never heard of ESET until I read the article. I would consider switching when my Kaspersky subscription runs out.

We discuss certain pitfalls with different anti-virus software programs on our webpage:
http://opendental.com/manual/virus.html
As mentioned, no anti-virus is perfect, however we have had the most success with AVG. If you are working with IT and they have a recommendation, you should follow their instruction.
The biggest pitfall with anti-virus software is their interference with the program, especially when running scans on the server. I always recommend users set their scans to run outside of business hours to mitigate the effect this has on the functionality of Open Dental software.
