I am new to Open Dental and I am looking at converting to it. I do have some concerns. At present the program assumes that whom ever logged on is the person making an entry. It does not confirm the identity of the user. This is like, on a paper system, signing a page at the start of the day and assume that all chart entries that day were done by you. Just like the paper system requires you to sign every entry individually, I need the dental program to do likewise. At the present time I can not guarantee that the person did not sign in turn away and have someone else enter something. In court this is called reasonable doubt and my records are useless.
What I need is a popup when an entry is made showing the user logged in and ask for a password. Also the ability to change the user signing this record would be required. I know that some would object but I have lost 50k for just this reason and was able to do nothing about it, so I do not care about people having to confirm their identity.

What would be involved if I wanted to get the programing done so that this deficiency is solved?

drtech or wstark has a plugin that auto-logs-out of Open Dental after a certain amount of inactivity, requiring you to log back in. Might be what you need.

Or the auto log off built into Open Dental?

Get Topaz signature pads and sign your notes and you won't have to worry. In my office, every provider signs every procedure note. We use Topaz signature pads. It doesn't matter who is logged in to OD. I might sign my exam & oral cancer notes when I am in the hygiene room even though the hygienist is logged in to OD, or I might sign a note at the front desk with my receptionist logged in to OD. Our signatures are forensically identifiable and proof of who actually signed the document.
