Backing up the A-Z folder

Post by Hersheydmd » Wed Aug 22, 2018 9:40 pm

My A-Z folder is 69 MB. Backup (from within O.D.) runs smoothly until it reaches 68.9 MB. Then is sits there for a very long time - 15 - 30 minutes - before it says "Backup Complete". Today I updated to the latest 18.1 version, but it's been happening for quite a while, even before updating. What would cause that?

Feels like a file is in use and waiting for the resource to be "released" but that kind of issue wouldn't typically happen every time you tried to make a backup...
The best thing about a boolean is even if you are wrong, you are only off by a bit.

Must have been a fluke. Just ran it again with no problem.
My specs: Dell Precision 7810 with Intel Xeon processor (8 core), Win 10 Pro 64-bit, 16GB of RAM, NVIDIA Quadro card, USB 3.0.
For the test I first emptied the OpenDentImages folder from the backup on 64GB thumbdrive.
OD database = 442MB. Took 3 min to backup.
Images folder = 1.9GB. Took 20 min to backup.
It did not lag at the end of the backup like it was doing the past few times.
Of course a regular backup would only back up files that changed in the Images folder, so it would be much faster.
Don't know what caused the lag previously, but Jason is probably right that maybe I had some file open and it had to be released.
Have a great holiday weekend.

I thought it was happening again. Last night the A-Z folder backup progress bar got all the way to 8.0 MB of 8.0 MB copied, but didn't complete until sometime after I left the office. Ran it again this morning and it ran normally. Clearly there must be a file that is open or running in the background.
Now, how can I figure out what file that is?

It's still taking an extremely long time to back up my A-Z folder.
I opened the Resource Monitors on my workstation and on my server and under Disk Activity I can see what files are in a read and write state. It looks like every file in the A-Z folder is being backed up every time I do a backup, not just files that have changed since the last backup.
I use two different thumb drives for backup and I alternate them daily.
On the progress bar during backup it says 'A to Z Folder: 30.9 MB of 31.0 MB copied" and it stays at that point for at least an hour or more. My OpenDentImages folder is about 1.1 GB.
I am on version 18.4.44.0, but this problem has continued through many updates.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have other programs files/folders saved in the AZ folder? ( I do )

I am not sure if OD is using any of the A-Z files... I do not know if this will help, but you can try it.

1- Presss: " Ctrl Alt Del" all together,
2- click on " Task Manager"
3- Click on" Services"
4- Stop " My SQL SERVICE:
...find " MySQL" right click on it, and click on "Stop"

5- Try to do your backups now , you can just copy and paste the files from your C: drive to your flash drive or to another location
6- Restart " MySQL SERVICE:
...find " MySQL" right click on it, and click on "Start"
if you don't restart it, OD will not work

I hope it works

*** We use Syncback to do our backups, it syncs only the files that have changed.

New discovery.
If I backup from my workstation (not my server) to another computer on the network it only takes 1-2 minutes to do the entire backup.
If I backup from the same workstation to a 120GB PNY USB thumbdrive or to an external USB WD or Seagate drive it takes many hours.
For comparison: If I backup a 100 MB Quickbooks file (using the backup command inside QuickBooks) from the same workstation to the same network computer, or to the same UBS drives, it takes less than a minute either way.
Does this make any sense?
