Is this computer a good choice?

Post by fishdrzig »

Optiplex 3010
•Processor: Intel Core 3rd Generation i3-3240 Processor (Dual Core, 3.40GHz, 3MB, w/ HD2500 Graphics)
•Windows 7 Professional
•250GB, 7200 RPM 3.5 inch SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive
•6GB NON-ECC, 1600MHZ DDR3
•8X DVD ROM Drive
•1GB AMD RADEON HD 7470
•Dell Outlet OptiPlex 3010 for Standard Power Supply Small Form Factor

These will be used in each of my 3 ops all hard wired to a Peer to Peer Dell Precision T1650 also running Windows 7 Pro
Besides a monitor, can you suggest anything else I may need to run Open Dental? thanks

This config looks pretty good. I have used Optiplexes in all my Ops and they are a workhorse. i3 is more than sufficient for Ops use; and you are having enough memory.

Question on your Video Card. Do you use dual monitors? If so, you may want to upgrade to Dual VGA.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response.
I do not use dual monitors. I wasn't even sure if I needed a video card or could just get away with Dell internal video card

I use Dell Optiplex 780 sff in my ops. Windows 7 pro, purchased off- lease ( generally 3 yo) on EBay... The operatory computers are drones and OD places very little burden on them. They are easy and cheap to replace and keep as spares. The server, on the other hand . . .

Do the Optiplex 780's need anything more than the generic internal video card that comes standard with this pc, or do I need to get something more for it. I do have an NVIDIA 1GB in my Dell Precision Server.

Well. Video is a function of what you want to see. I just noticed that you already have a 1gb radeon GPU 7470 in your quote. That is a Dual video card. If you dont need it, you can simply go with the default GPU that comes with the mother board. If you dont like what you see, you can always throw in a graphical card (low profile) in the future, If you are not constrained by budget, I will keep the dual vga. All my Ops have dual VGAs.

Hope this helps!

You didn't specify which version of Windows 7 you are getting. While most newer computers are 64-bit, if you have older hardware you use (printers, scanners, intraoral cameras, etc), they may not have 64-bit drivers...and as such, won't work. Confirm that all these devices have 64-bit drivers, and if not, go with a 32-bit version.

Hope this helps.

The used Optiplex 780 sff's are in the $140 range... Comes with keyboard and mouse, no monitor.
