That is a very vague error and could be a number of things. Usually it's because the MySQL service didn't start which could be a result of a lot of things. If you don't feel like calling in and having support look at it, you can always try the steps in the "Database not Present" section: http://opendental.com/manual/troubleshooting.html

Ok, got it installed.
Now I get a message that MySQL can not stop during Restore.

Make sure to run Open Dental with the same user permissions that you installed MySQL with, most likely just need to right click the Open Dental icon on your desktop and hit Run As Administrator. Then Open Dental will have the correct permissions to stop a service that was installed as an administrator.

Re: Install on Dell Laptop w Windows 7 Issue
I don't fully understand the question. My biggest gap is knowing what "this way" means exactly. If you're referring to running as administrator, yes. You can set your Open Dental to always run as administrator so that you don't have to keep right clicking on it all the time. Just right click the icon, properties, check the always run as administrator box towards the bottom. If you're referring to running the restore on the windows 7 operating system then yes as well. It should run the same on all versions of windows that have the .NET framework. Otherwise, if you are referring to a special set of steps you are taking in restoring, I'll have to ask you to elaborate. If you're planning on setting up several laptops as restore laptops then the answers yes. One restore computer should suffice though.
