Card Scanner Success

Post by DavidWolf »

Just wondering if anyone uses a business card scanner to scan insurance cards into open dental?

I went for a physical yesterday and my physician's office was doing this for medical cards....I thought it was a great idea.
Currently we photocopy them and then scan them later....too much work compared to this idea.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, DW

I use a CardScan 600c for scanning business cards and it formats the info into the CardScan software.

How can I set this up to scan directly into the OD Image file of the patient?

Cheers!!

CARD SCAN SUCCESS!

Post by DavidWolf »

Ok, I just got my IrisCard Pro PC/MAC US 3.50.

I installed the scanner software and scanner. I calibrated the scanner as instructed. I closed the software that came with the scanner. I Opened Open Dental and went to images. I clicked the button that says 'SCAN' a small window opened and asked me to pick a scanner. I picked the Iris Scanner. Another window opened which was from the scanner asking me for the options I wanted to choose for this scan. I selected business card landscape and left everything else alone. I clicked scan and the card scanned right through. Then Open Dental asked me where I wanted to file the new image. I selected insurance and SUCCESS. I perfect image of the card was right in front of me..It took a few tries to get the proper orientation. For this scanner it is face down and top of the card first.

I can't beleive how easy this was......Long Live Open Dental!

Cheers,

Can you also scan driver licenses and plastic insurance cards? Can you scan both sides at once? I have the Cardscan 600 and it doesn't link directly to Open Dent, it doesn't see the scanner.

We use the optic slim M12. It scans cards, whole sheets, whatever you want right into OD via TWAIN. It is not good for multiple pages as it is too slow, but for cards and single sheets it works like a charm and doesn't take up hardly any space. Not double sided, but fast enough for cards that it isn't much time to just slip the other side right in. I would say about a 3 sec scan per side on cards.

Any problems with different thickness of cards? Some of the drivers license that are like credit cards won't go through the Fujitsu 5120 I have so I tried the Cardscan 800 but it really only seems to work with their software. I also get the following error message, only when trying to scan from within OD both on the Cardscan and the Fujitsu,

"Twain error" Failed to negotiate Pixel type. App and source found no common values."

Any suggestions? Thanks.

About the Twain error... We are moving to a much newer Twain interface which will hopefully eliminate any error messages about pixel format that seem to happen with some devices. So try again when 5.3 comes out in bit less than a month.
