Error

Post by drtech » Thu Feb 27, 2014 2:20 pm

I can't duplicate this on any computer but one. Not sure if it is a windows error because of this one computer issue?
This is when you click the view button to see an already scanned EOB. If you continue, it will scan documents into other people's chart according to my front desk.

Open Dental version 13.2.18 on Windows 7

Does not occur on the two windows 8 computers that I tested it on to duplicate.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

This error is tied to Adobe.
What version of Open Dental are you using? What are you doing when you get the error?

He answered both of those questions:

Update past v13.2.29 for the bug fix "Image module, Adobe Reader enhancements." That was our attempt at fixing whatever Adobe was throwing a fit about.

We haven't heard back from many people that our attempted fix worked. Did it work for you? I'm assuming because the complaints stopped that it worked but I never like assuming.

I actually have not yet updated and tested. It works fine on all our computers but the one. I will update you when I try it.

I don't have this problem anymore, but I ended up formatting the windows 7 computer and upgrading it to windows 8 because of other issues as well and now it works fine. So, don't really know what the issue was to help you with future troubleshooting. I saw that you have that listed in 14.2 as an unknown error still.

So get this guys (and gals). I finally got fed up with the random calls about this error and the fact that no one at HQ can duplicate it so I convinced this nice lady to let me install a development environment on her workstation one afternoon. After 2 1/2 hours of trying to figure out what's going on programmatically I thought to myself... Self, we're Open Dental programmers, our code has to be right. And that's where the turning point in my endeavor came and I'm now pretty sure I know what the root of the issue is.

Solution:
Use an internet browser to open a pdf.
For this office, their default browser was Chrome and it did NOT have the Adobe plugin installed (it uses a built in chrome pdf viewer) and I couldn't figure out how to get the Adobe plugin installed (I know right?). Therefore, I set their default browser to IE 9 (gasp). After opening one pdf in IE 9, Open Dental was magically allowed to view pdfs. I then set their default web browser back to Chrome, because lets face it... who uses IE anymore, and everything was working swimmingly.

Science Time:
My theory is that deep in the OS level somewhere Adobe has to register it's dll (so that the COM reference can be used) and these browser plugins use some voodoo magic and do it for us behind the scenes. So hopefully I can figure out a way to learn their dark arts and register the necessary files with the OS if it isn't already registered (probably why no one at HQ can duplicate). If I cannot figure it out, this workaround will just have to be the answer I guess.

Hope this helps a frustrated user some day.

In case you need detailed steps for finding Adobe plugin settings:

Just to make this more interesting, I believe I'm the exception to this rule. I also use Chrome and it's built-in pdf reader. I have never had this error in any of my computers. This could probably be a glitch in the installation on some computers.
