Flashing screens

Post by drtech » Fri Nov 30, 2007 1:39 pm

I am having problems on one computer that I just installed with dual monitors. (1 VGA and 1 DVI) Sometimes the appt book and even the other modules keep flashing like a repeated refresh. It happens with just one copy of OD open, but really goes wild when two are open. This only happens with OD and no other programs. The whole tool bar and title bar flash over and over. It seems to have something to do with the pop-up boxes on appts.

I know there were problems with graphics cards/drivers with the 3-D chart, but could this be a graphics card problem or anyone have an idea of what is going on? I have another computer with the same setup (slightly different gforce card(6200 and 6500 I think) and it works great with no flashing....I have the system wide refresh rate at like 10 seconds for the appt book)

How did you get on with this

Post by michaelfreydental » Mon Feb 11, 2008 9:00 pm

I am having the same problem with my new surgery. I have Nvida 7300Gs video cards installed and it keeps flickering in all screens. The jumping arround is making me crazy. I have updated the drivers for the cards and tried disableing all the features of the card but it still happens. The only way to get it to stop is to totaly disable hardware acceleration in troublehsooting in display properties but that makes all other applications very slow. The problem is only happening in open dental not in any other programs. Did you find a solution to the problem.

Try disabling the appointment popups. I'm just totally guessing here.

Is it maximized? Where's your Windows task bar? Is it hidden? Have you tried moving it or unhiding it? Is your setup with dual monitors also? If so, which of the two monitors is it happening on? Are both monitors on the card, or is one of them on the motherboard VGA?

Screen Flicker (Environment)

Post by michaelfreydental » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:00 pm

All systems are brand new with the video card type listed above.
The surgery systems do run two monitors in clone mode but the reception monitor has only one video head enable (ie 1 monitor) with the same problems.

Screen will jump sideways during user activity often moving the mouse focus or making a drop down dissapear. Once the drop down is selected again it repaints.

We are also experiencing various screen (particularly the appoint ment screen) goign completely white and freezing. Closing OD and reopening recovers ok.

And what version of OD are you using? It's very critical with all claimed bugs that we know what version of OD we're talking about. What is your screen size? Is it really big, like 30"? When you say you, "turn off hardware acceleration" to make it work, does that mean that you change something from within Open Dental, in the Graphics window? Or does that mean that you turn it off from the settings panels within Windows?

I think you forgot to answer my question about where the taskbar is and whether it is hidden.

I'm leaning towards calling it a bug in the graphics driver, in which case, we'll have to purchase that exact card, install the exact driver you're using, and try to duplicate it. The other possibility is that it is an ordinary bug on our end. But then it seems like it wouldn't matter whether you turn off hardware acceleration or not.

Ignore most of my last post. I still need to know which version of OD you're talking about, but Nathan says he has researched this issue enough to be convinced that it's the MS Intellimouse software that's causing the problem and that it has nothing to do with your graphics card. He's trying to duplicate it. Could there be a mouse with lots of buttons, and someone is accidentally pushing an extra button on the mouse that is supposed to be used for something like resizing windows? Try to duplicate it using extra mouse buttons. If that's the case, then you might disable those mouse buttons.
