10K server and I am confused

Post by Roy A Bloom » Thu Sep 15, 2011 4:07 pm

OK so what is new. Here is the deal. I go to a lot of offices and provide IV sedation etc. I looked at various ways to accomplish automation so I did not have to answer phone calss texts etc for appointments and a lot of other things. All went very well until I tried mypatient schedular which required VM ware because of connectors. Basically I think it has something to to with the program running on a Linux.

I looked into getting a dedicated server at Rackspace ans it was 800 a month. Part of the beauty of my practice is virtually no overhead other than meds and IV setups.

Realizing that I could spend a couple of years working on putting together the whole package I hired ans IT company by the hour.

Everything was great Dell Server running MS server 2008 R2 SP1 and citrix offline backups NAS 25MG download and upload from cable company Yada yada .......until they got to the part where the Motion computers out in the field would not have OD installed. He showed me a client that had some programs like excel etc that were not on his computer but he could use them by logging into the server.

I have always had OD installed on each workstation.......I am confused can this be done with OD using the anesthesia module and my patient scheduler? It is a big investment but will pay for itself in less than 2 years. It would open a lot of avenues that take me a lot of time. I am a hair away from Bluetoothing the EKG to the tablet and wonder how this is going to be sent to a central server. Email will be through exchange and automatically sent in PDF form to the office I am at. This project has taken the better part of a year and I am ready to finish.

Our website mentions desktop virtualization (RDP). But you are talking about application virtualization which is more advanced. It may or may not work.

You say you have always had OD installed on each workstation. Does that mean on your laptop, or does that mean on a computer in each of the dozens of offices where you provide service?

What are you trying to accomplish? Take your laptop out in the field and use Open Dental on this laptop, while the server is.. hosted?

Combined with the Anesthetic Record.. Hmmm.. Bandwidth considerations..

The main thing in my mind would be keeping a database on the computer in the field so you dont have to be so dependent on a connection to the server...

Your talking about Citrix Xen or RDP vs installing Open Dental on your workstation and using a VPN/Web Service. A lot of it depends on your EKG machine and hot it interfaces with the pc, and the bandwidth going over a serial or comport, or bluetooth comport... timings and latency.

Interesting.. I think Jordan has an option to sync databases but you have to remove primary keys??? Would have to investigate. Sounds fun!

I would test it out before implementing.
