OD crashing on win7 after inactivity

Post by drtech » Tue Nov 24, 2009 11:03 am

having a periodic problem with v 6.8.18 crashing on windows 7. Doesn't happen very often, but just pops up a message, that Open Dental has crashed, (or maybe it stopped responding) or something like that and windows7 says "searching for a solution..." Of course it never finds one, so you just click cancel and open it again.

It seems to be happening after it sits awhile with no activity. It does not have anything to do with going in and out of sleep mode because it is on the computers that don't sleep and I leave on all the time. It does not seem to happen on those that we restart each day, so might be something with Win7, might be some network sleep problem is what I am thinking....

6.8.19(beta) Released 11/24/2009
Error: Open Dental has stopped working. Happened a few times a day when an appointment was on the pinboard.

I think that is the message, so you might have already taken care of it...but not sure mine has to do with the pinboard...will try to investigate and see after I update to 6.8.19

The fix for 6.8.19 did not work. I have some questions for you:
1. Are you using an integrated graphics card?
2. Random primary keys?
3. Is the appointment module open when it happens?
4. Is it just on a few computers or on all of them?
5. Remote access software like VNC or TS?

We would really appreciate help answering these questions. We have some ideas, but they are broad, and it would help to narrow the issue a bit more.

1) no, not integrated graphics, nvidia 6200 and up on most of my computers. The one that it is happening on all the time is mine, It is a intel P4 with NVidia 6200 DVI + VGA. Win7 Home Premium 32bit
2) no random primary keys
3) I do think the appt module is open since i usually leave that open, but couldn't say for sure every time
4) It seems to be on only some computers, but I am pretty sure it is only after they have been idle for a long time (screen saver or something to do with power management?)
5) I do have LogMeIn on mine, the one I notice it on the most, but it is not on one of them that also does it, so that is not it.

I will see what more I can add after we get back in the office this week....

I'm almost positive it's a memory leak. For days now, we have been reviewing the code and making enhancements to memory management. So it might already be fixed by now. Immediate feedback on our attempted fixes would be very welcome. We will continue our review of memory management until the issue is resolved.

so far looks good, but we will have to let it sit overnight as see if we get any crashes by tomorrow.

No, still did it. OD was open for more than 24 hours on my same computer and it crashed. v 6.8.21 The message was"Open Dental has stopped working...A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" just a close button is there to push.

1)left on the appt module
2) nothing on the pinboard, no tasks popped up (I don't think I have any sounds for my messaging like you fixed the memory leak on)
3) I did have two copies of OD going. The one that crashed I opened yesterday (> 24hrs). The second copy I opened up this morning and is still running even after the other copy crashed and closed.
4) they are on separate monitors (extended desktop 1 & 2) The one that crashed is the main monitor, #1

ok, the one on my monitor 2 is still running (more than 48 hrs) and the copy I reopened on monitor 1 (about 20 hrs ago) crashed again this morning after I clicked the "Today" button on the schedule. It was sitting open on yesterday in the appointment module and still running until I clicked the button.

ok, now the copy open on monitor 2 that was there for more than 48 hrs crashed when I went to click the today button on the appointment book. Certainly seems to be related to time it sits there....

yes, it seem to be much better, but I did have the first crash today....same error, but it did run for 5 days now instead of 1. You must be on the right track, but we still have a memory leak somewhere...
