NPI

Post by drtech » Thu May 15, 2008 9:45 am

I just got a message from MetLife I think it is that says our e-claims don't have our NPI # on them. I thought for sure I set this up last year actually thought it was working, but throughout the year I got a few messages that asked us about our NPI, but I thought they were just automated messages. What do I need to check to make sure our NPI is actually getting sent on our claims? (I am still using ADA2002 for paper claims...are the e-claims connected to this and do I have to upgrade to 2006 in order for it to work on the e-claims?) Using v5.6 and I have entered our NPI's in the provider info window under Lists | Providers.

I know that the vast majority of our users do have NPI's going through because I get confirmation emails to that effect from the clearinghouses. There are a few users who are still sending e-claims without NPI's, but the only way I think that is allowed is because they are on older versions of OD. You could open up your X12 text from within the send claims window. You should see your NPI number in there on the line about 12 lines down that starts with "NM1*85".

Do you have both a Type 1 and Type 2 NPI? We had to file for a Type 2 NPI as well, don't ask me why be DD required that we did.

Jordan, that line is in my file and has the NPI, but dentalexchange is still sending me a message that we have recently sent claims w/o NPI's....so I am calling them now to find out what the deal is....

Jordan,
I am still using an older version of OD and the 2002 claim form. I just started doing some e-claims but they get rejected saying that I am missing NPI. I looked at the X12 in wordpad and there is no NPI number on the 12th line down. How do I get my NPI to show up there in OD?

Thanks,
Dan

What older version are you using? Unfortunately, with the mandate of the NPI a few years ago, it almost forces you to upgrade to a somewhat newer version. But some clearinghouses, like DentalXChange, will put the NPI in there for you even if you are on an old version.

We are using version 4. The older versions do not include the NPI in the e-claims with the clearinghouses? Can I manually change it myself?

No, you can't unless you want to spend days programming it. It would be incredibly complicated. But like I said, the clearinghouse can stick it in there automatically for you.

Jordan,
Thanks for your help. Office Ally was able to make adjustments to the ANSI file before submission. OfficeAlly really complimented your software for the X12 file. I would recommend both OD and OfficeAlly for sending eclaims. Thanks again.
