How to use a thermal printer for Patient Portal Credentials

Post by Scott » Mon Jun 01, 2020 6:11 pm

Hi,
We would like to use the ubiquitous Epson TM20II thermal printer to print out the Patient Portal credentials for patients instead of wasting a whole sheet of paper. The printer supports an auto-cut feature that allows the patient to tear off the thermal printout easily so nothing needs touched by anyone but the patient for that exchange. It seems we just need another option in Printer Setup that is used to set the default for printing those credentials. Any thoughts?

Regards,
Scott

Hello Scott,
There are a couple of alternatives that can also reduce paper waste and limit contact with documents that you exchange with your patients. One is setting up automated patient portal invitations that are sent via email. Another option is adding a Patient Portal credentials field to a document that you will already be giving to patients. Please see the "Alternative Methods to Grant Access" section on the following page of our manual for further details, https://www.opendental.com/manual/portalaccess.html.

If neither of these options suit your needs, please send us a feature request regarding the Printer Setup option that you mentioned. More information about feature requests can be found in our manual, https://www.opendental.com/manual/featurerequests.html.

Thank you for pointing out further possibilities for getting the Patient Portal access rolled out to our clients. I'll add the feature request as well since the functionality to print the access credentials is already there and nobody wants to see a whole sheet of paper get wasted for three little lines. I'm fairly confident a lot of our clients will want them printed right there at the front desk as we push them towards the portal (mostly for secure emails)
