Open Dental on a domain controller

Post by emilm18 » Tue Apr 25, 2017 6:48 am

Hello.

I am looking to install Open Dental and Domain Controller on the same server in order to save on windows server licensing costs by going with server essentials as my only server. Any issues with this?

Thanks!

We at Open Dental would not recommend using the same server for Domain Controller and Open Dental. These are two mission critical functions that deserve their own server. When we provide support, we sometimes need access to the Open Dental server, and we would not be entirely comfortable logging into your Domain Controller. If you are looking to save costs, you could set up two virtual machines on the same physical server, or you could use a regular Windows 10 PC as the Open Dental server if you are a small office.

We have our OD and Domain controller as the same virtual server. Both domain control and OD are mission critical so if either were to go down, the office is down. It is putting all your eggs in one basket but it is also less eggs to worry about. Only one server to update, backup, etc.
