Open Dental on Linux

Post by emilm18 » Sun Apr 09, 2017 10:44 am

Hi Everyone.

Just wanted to see if there is a comprehensive guide on running open dental on linux servers with windows 10 PC's. I've seen a couple threads and some general info but wondering if theres anything that is comprehensive step by step end to end guide.

Thanks!

Our online manual will contain the most comprehensive guide to running a Linux server.

Best setup possible - stability (and "openess") of Linux, with the familiarity of Windows on the client side. I have been running on Linux since 2010 - Debian OS primary server with Debian virutal server (Oracle VirtualBox) running MySQL Server and SAMBA fileserver. I also run a virtual server for my digital radiograph software.

Thanks everyone!

What if i want to start in windows and then go to linux or vice versa. Is the backup and restore from one filesystem to the other possible?

Yes, it is possible but starts to get complicated if you use different versions of MySQL. So keep that in mind when switching between OS.

Thanks Justin.

Would you know, would this be something that is included in the standard open dental support or would that cost me extra when it's time to do it such as a conversion.

We don't officially support Linux at all. The only support (which would be included) that we give for Linux is theoretical.
E.g. If you needed to set up a file share and called us for support we would simply say something along the lines of "Linux users need to set up a network share via a software like Samba" and then you would have to go research / install Samba yourself. We would not do it for you.

Note: Databases in a Linux environment are a little easier for us to "support" because we can access the database via a Windows machine by talking directly to the MySQL service (no Linux needed for that). If we can help via Open Dental the application or via another Windows machine on the network, we will help you (included with standard support) but if it requires logging into your Linux box and doing command line shenanigans, we will not help you other than telling you what Open Dental expects and then you'll have to spend your weekend figuring it out.
