HIPAA

Post by jrpappy » Thu Jul 14, 2016 11:18 am

I'm going through the HIPAA page of the OD manual. I've barely gotten into it and ran into my first glitch.

When I turned on my server's firewall and made OD and exception I was unable to login to OD on any workstation.

At a glance I don't think there is any antivirus software running currently on the server. I know this is probably not a good idea but at least I know that it's not an antivirus software that's blocking OD.

Any suggestions? Also, suggestions on a comprehensive antivirus solution for the office that won't break the bank?

Are you using server name to try and access the server from the workstation? Try using the IP address of the server instead. You may have a DNS issue.

Ok. Thanks for the quick reply. Remind me how to figure out the IP for the server again

There are a few ways, but the easiest (I'm a DOS girl) is to open command line and type

Code: Select all

ipconfig

Ok, that didn't work. I opened port 3306 and it's working. Is that the right move?

Yes.. port 3306 should be open on the server firewall. You would add the rule in the Windows Firewall, BUT you want to make sure the rule is for Private or Domain or both. Then go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, and be SURE your network is set for Private or Domain but NOT public.

Once port 3306 is open to the local workstations, they SHOULD be able to talk to the server. Especially if File Sharing is working?

The Windows Firewall is just to control who gets to talk to the server. Not to be confused with your router's firewall.

If you want to be SURE you are not exposing port to the internet...

http://www.canyouseeme.org/ type in 3306 and click Check Port when you are at your office.

Yes. Sorry, I assumed that was already open. (You know what they say about assuming...)
If the traffic was being blocked by the firewall, Open Dental would not be able to connect to any of the specified mysql hosts.

Thanks to both of you!

So at http://www.canyouseeme.org/, can I check that from any computer that is on the network?

I tried it from my workstation and got a reply that it timed out and could not be seen.

Thanks

Yes. Since I opened port 3306 last week, all workstations are able to access the A-Z folder. Everything is working normally.

You don't want port 3306 open to the public internet, just your local network (the computers in your office). Since Open Dental is working AND you're getting the "error" that canyouseeme can't see that port opened you are setup correctly. If canyouseeme could access that port than there would be a good chance that anyone in the world would have access to your database. That wouldn't been good.
