RFID Login

Post by draluu » Mon Apr 20, 2015 2:50 am

I have been using the USB 125KHz EM4100 RFID reader and keytags for login to OD for a while to speed up login when logon is not in 'Manually enter logon credentials' mode http://www.opendental.com/manual/securitylogin.html. There is no modification to OD needed. Click on your User name, then pass the key tag in front of the USB reader to have the 32bit ID (10 digit) entered in the password window. The USB reader works like a keyboard, every time the key tag is passed in front of it, the 10 digit associated with the key tag is entered.
Do note that EM4100 key tags have a fixed 32 bit ID while EM4305 key tags can be programmed with their own 32 bit ID. All this can be purchased on Ebay for about $50.

In 'Manually enter logon credentials' mode, the MiFare 13.56Mhz is indicated as it can be programmed with both user name and password. The password in the 13.56Mhz RFID can contain alphanumeric while the 125KHz RFID can only be numeric. Also the 125KHz maximum reading range is 10cm while the 13.56Mhz can be read from as far as 1m. I have yet to experiment with the 13.56MHz because it needs programming to work with OD but offers higher security.

I think if OD remember the last user of each OD instance so I save time from selecting user name.
