Carbonite Backup

We recently started to backup our software with carbonite. Now we are experiencing problems with our database, error messages on sheets, etc... OD support has told us carbonite is not supported...I don't understand how the backup software needs to be supported? Anybody else have these problems? What's the solution?

It all has to do with how the backup software backs files up. Do they rename them, move them, lock them, before "backing them up"? Depending on how they back up the files greatly affects MySQL while it is active. MySQL expects a file to be there and in a certain fashion and if a backup software manipulates that in any way, it will flag itself as corrupt.

Recommendation: Currently we strongly recommend against using Carbonite for backing up databases of any kind, including Open Dental. While some customers have succesfully used Carbonite to restore backups, others have reported corrupt files and even appeared to have databases corrupted by the backup process without even doing a restore.
After lengthly discussions with Carbonite technical staff, both Carbonite and Open Dental have concluded that Carbonite is not capable of backing up live databases. This may be due to the incremental nature of Carbonite backups. If you are currently using Carbonite, continue to do manual Backups. Plan to switch to another solution, like CrashPlanPro or Central Data Storage, as soon as possible.

Are you using the Carbonite Server Backup version (you should be)?

If not, Carbonite may lock files when OD is trying to write to them, causing all kinds of problems.

So you either need to be using the Server Backup version or just scheduling Carbonite backups when there is no chance that anyone might be using OD
