What "feature level" of DirectX does OD use?

Post by jcbdmd » Sun Aug 24, 2014 4:06 pm

The reason I ask is because on 12 systems with i5 / Intel 4600 integrated graphics I am unable to enable DirectX in the chart.

All have stock win8.1 which comes with DX11.

DXDiag reports no problems... except that it appears that the new intel integrated graphics don't support anything older than DX9.1 "feature level".

These integrated 4xxx graphics cards are in just about everything, so I'm sure you would have heard of someone else having this problem.

Is there even such a thing as a feature level below 9_1?

I was happy to read that Windows 8 seems to have kept its backwards compatibility:
Windows 8 extends the Direct3D 11 API with Direct3D 11.1. Direct3D 11.1 supports all existing hardware that feature levels 11, 10_x, and 9_x support, as well as a new 11_1 feature level.

As for Open Dental's stand on Direct X, I don't see where we specify any feature level at all. Have you tried installing the Direct X SDK on the computer with the issue (for whatever reason this fixes odd graphical glitches sometimes)? Does OpenGL work on the computer (I'm not asking you to use OpenGL in lieu of Direct X, simply curious)?
The best thing about a boolean is even if you are wrong, you are only off by a bit.

We have not tried DX SDK because with windows 8.1 you have to install Windows SDK (Dx SDK was merged with Win SDK), something I really don't want to have to do.

We are currently using OpenGL just fine. I just cannot enable DX on any of my brand new 8.1 PCs with latest intel drivers installed. DX works fine on my Windows 7 boxen with nvidia cards.

I have never been able to solve it except for installing this SDK. It works like a charm and is pretty fast to install...
