Truecrypt to Bitlocker now?

Post by fishdrzig » Sun Jul 27, 2014 6:51 am

I have my office Peer to Peer Windows 7 Pro 64-bit encrypted with TrueCrypt as well as my personal laptop with the same configuration. I use Bitlocker for my AV software.

Now that TrueCrypt is not safe (I just heard about it), what are my options to migrate everything over to Bitlocker? Thank you for the help

Format your drives with NTFS, and then use Bitlocker with Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 2008 Server and higher.

I have been using this so far...... for people who still have 2003 server.

Justin
So basically I first have to upgrade my version of Windows otherwise I will be unable to encrypt with Bitlocker?

Correct. If you already have Windows 7 installed on this computer in question, you CAN use the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade....

If MS is still selling those for Windows 7. Otherwise you must upgrade and do a clean install, or go to.. Windows 8

Ok got it thanks. After I do this, should I migrate over to Bitlocker first or completely decrypt from Truecrypt first? Thanks for the help

What's wrong with truecrypt? Because it's no longer supported?

The *secret* developers suddenly posted a notice that it was no longer under development and should not be used anymore. They didn't say why. Google a bit and you'll get the whole story...

You should decrypt with truecrypt first and then you can use bitlocker.

Ok
Went to Windows Anytime upgrade and said I could purchase Windows 7 Ultimate for $129.99 and since the only difference between my present Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate is the Bitlocker option is this worth it or would going to Windows 8 be better?
Question 2 -- Just wondering I have Bitlocker internet security running on my computers as my Antivirus software protection, but still will need to go to Ultimate for the Windows 7 Bitlocker encryption protection?

Thanks for the help

Windows 8 natively supports hardware based bitlocker encryption that offloads the encryption onto the drive in SSD's. Windows 7 doesn't. Windows 8 is probably the better choice going forward with encryption in mind. For example, encrypting an SSD that supports eDrive takes seconds in windows 8 and takes hours in windows 7. Your SSD has to support Opal and eDrive also.

Well I my computers don't have SSD drives so the rest of the advice I can't really follow very well. Sorry, but thanks for trying, might have to dumb it down for me.

If you don't see yourself upgrading your drives to SSDs anytime soon, just upgrade windows 7.
