Great remote option

Post by docholiday » Tue Feb 11, 2014 5:10 am

Hey All,
I'm mainly a lurker here, but wanted to share with you if you weren't already aware:
Since the once free LogMeIn service no longer has a free option, I reviewed other free options. I came across TeamViewer which like LogMeIn previously, has both free and paid options.
Incidentally, the free version of TeamViewer provides features that were only available in a paid version of LogMeIn, so it is quite robust for a free option. Of course, if you like it, please support the paid version.
And no, I don't work for them or get any reimbursement, I just wanted to share what I thought was some good info. :)

Why not just use Windows built in Remote Desktop? Works flawlessly and is free.

I'm an RDP/VNC guy myself. However I read a post on dentaltown about HIPAA requirements that potentially rule out RDP/VNC as viable options. A few things to consider:

1) RDP logs out the current user when the remote user logs in. VNC allows concurrent use. Apparently TeamViewer allows concurrent use as well.
2) Encryption. RDP has no encryption. HIPAA requirement.
3) Logs. Time logged in/out. What was transferred. What was done, etc. RDP/VNC do not do logs.

Dr.Tech mentioned RDP over Hamachi VPN for encryption purposes. This option still lacks logging.

I will be evaluating TeamViewer for my own use. Thank you for posting.
