Take a look at this page. http://www.opendental.com/manual/appointments.html

That gives a good over view of how to handle appointments in Open Dental. For our office we set up appointment views to show patient status. First go to (setup/definitions/appt confirmed) Select the colors you want for each status. Then go to (setup/appointment views) and then double click the default view. Locate the ConfirmedColor flag and send it to the main list. The double click the ConfirmedColor flag and change alignment to UR. Say OK and close out of appt views. Now your schedule will have a dot of color on the upper right that reflects the patients status. You can change status on the lower right side of the appt view by selecting an appt and then selecting the status you want.

You must also select the appropriate appointment view for this to display on the schedule. Go to the appointment module. On the right side, under the calendar, there is a "View" with a drop down menu. Select F1-Default, or the view that you added the confirmation status to.
