Win7/Win8 slow

Post by Hersheydmd » Tue Jan 08, 2013 5:09 pm

Does anyone know why every action on Win7 & Win8 workstations have a lag. WinXP responds instantaneously even on older machines, but Win7 & 8 always seemed to have a delayed response. Example, when signing on the Topaz pad the signature appears on the screen in slow motion. I turned off UAC in Win7 and it didn't make a difference. Anyone else notice this problem?

I think so. In our office the 3D tooth charts are visibly slower on Win 7/8 machines than on Win XP machines with identical/lesser hardware. Clicking on a tooth number makes the entire chart refresh from left to right. Very frustrating.

our win7/Win8 machines run very fast....better in fact than WinXP...not sure what your issue is, proabably a network configuration issue.

Jay: update your directX SDK to fix the chart slow drawing. I will upload the version that seems to work with OD and post a link here soon.

Actually we had a problem with the Win 8 machine with OpenGL and I fixed it using an older Intel accelerator version that was "not recommended." Following your post though I installed the SDK and believe it or not it worked on the Core2Duo machines with G3100 integrated graphics and now we have DirectX on those machines. The SDK does not however work on our older off-lease XP machines: installs but the DirectX graphics are not selectable in OD. Thank you very much for responding and helping on this.

Improved Win7 & Win8 performance greatly by tweaking some settings:
1) Advanced System Properties: removed most of the checkmarks, except for Enable Peek; show thumbnails instead of files; smooth edges of screen fonts; use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.
2) Disabled services that I don't need running.
3) Trimmed startup programs (using msconfig or CCleaner) to the bare essentials needed.

No longer have that 3sec lag everytime I click on something in OD.
