Steriplex

Post by jordansparks » Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:46 pm

A new high-level sporicidal disinfectant is on the market called Steriplex. It's more effective than bleach, but is also totally non-toxic to humans. You could pour this stuff on an open burn wound without any problems. In fact, they are considering doing exactly that. It's recommended for food contact surfaces without rinsing afterwards. There's never been anything remotely close to this before. I don't normally post off-topic messages, but I consider this to be the #1 technology breakthrough of the decade and I'm extremely excited about it.

This product comes as a liquid that you use with wipe dispensers, and also with spray bottles, if desired. You will want to get the 6 cannister with the non-activated gallon of liquid. Don't purchase a 3 cannister, because they will activate it before they ship. The refills consists of another gallon plus more dry wipes. Once you activate the gallon, it's good for 60 days. It comes to about $100/gal.

The only weird thing about ordering is that everybody seems to be set up for large customers. They don't let you directly purchase online, but instead make you contact them for a quote. There must be some restriction from the manufacturer that requires this. But this company http://www.go1bio.com at least has a form that you can fill out and almost place the order. You finish it after talking to someone. And they claim reorders can be done entirely online.

From now on, I'm going to be the "OCD guy with the wipes". I'm going to use this stuff all over my kitchen, at the office, at the store, public bathrooms, kids toys, etc. No more alcohol hand sanitizer gel. No more spray-wipe-spray. No more compromises or excuses.

You forgot to add bleach stains ruining office carpet, scrubs, etc. to that list.

That's great news. Thanks for the tip

http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_sear ... 111223.pdf
contains a fair amount of data. On page 12, it states, "This product is not to be used as a terminal sterilant/high level disinfectant on any surface or
instrument that (1) is introduced directly into the human body, either into or in contact with the
bloodstream, or normally sterile areas of the body, or (2) contacts intact mucous membranes but
which does not normally penetrate the blood barrier or otherwise enter normally sterile areas of the
body. This product may be used to pre-clean or decontaminate critical or semi-critical medical
devices prior to sterilization or high-level disinfection."

So I was wrong about being able to use it as a cold sterile replacement for gluteraldehyde. 99.9999% spore kill in 5 minutes isn't the same as 100%, I guess. Or maybe they just need to jump through more hoops with the EPA to prove it works as well as gluteraldehyde for this application.

I thought about that, and it's very tempting. But I would wait. The very first endo studies are just coming out. This one, for example,
https://digarchive.library.vcu.edu/bits ... sequence=1
concludes that Steriplex is cytotoxic. Not from the active ingredient, silver, but probably from the mildly acidic carrier solution that is present to help with surface cleaning. I think it may need to be reformulated for use in endodontics. I think the claims I heard about it being put on burns must have been for the active ingredient itself rather than the particular mixture of chemicals being marketed as a healthcare disinfectant.

In light of recent media coverage of the Oklahoma OS, I am looking at the latest in surface disinfectants. Is anyone using this stuff to clean chairs, counters, etc? Any thoughts on this or any other products?
