procedure notes order

Post by openwide » Tue Oct 18, 2011 1:30 am

Just upgraded to the latest 11.0.?? I thought this would have been corrected.

Saw a new patient yesterday who had 2 appointments in 1 day.
Did an exam and denture repair early morning 8:30am.
At the end of the day he had another appointment to "deliver denture" (office code) at 4pm.

The appointment to deliver denture was at the bottom of all the notes.
The procedure "deliver denture" was at the top????????

So now if you look in procedure notes it appears that the first thing I did on the patient was "deliver denture"

Yup.. agreed.
Bills can be confusing the last thing we need is out of sync time line.

I'm particularly 'fond' of posting an insurance payment then billing the patient for the balance..
'Bill sent' is almost always the line 'above' the payment entry
.. so it does look odd and confusing.

This is an important issue in need of a 'Fix'
But I have a feeling it's not an easy ..or it would have been done long ago..
Isn't that right Jordan?

Still the best dental management program out there.

Just seems like listing order needs to be established. There are other circumstances where things list in strange orders. Even Rx's . If I write 2 back to back they sometimes dont list one after the other. Seems strange.

Again yesterday. Saw a patient for x-rays and limited exam. Did treatment plan & gave prescriptions. Everything is scattered in the list of notes. Why wouldn't the procedures be listed together, treatment plan together, prescriptions together?

I would think the appointment should be at the top, then the procedures, then either the scripts or treatment plan.

I think there's a feature request that addresses it. It's very very complicated. The primary sorting is by date/time. For example, if your appointment has a date/time of 12:30, one procedure has a date/time of 12:25, and another procedure has a date/time of 12:35, it might cause some ordering problems. You have control over many of the date/time fields, so you might be able to move them around manually. Some of them don't have a time element, which might cause them to move to midnight. In many cases, this is intentional on our part. There are lots of other complex issues involved as well. One issue is that each office wants it to show a different way. We can't do very much about it without building a settings page that lets each office decide how to order the items. Also, are you clicking on any of the column headers to sort? That might move things around unexpectedly.

I would think the priority would be to first just put common things together. I dont care which order you pick as much as i would like to see common things bunched together.

I just clicked on the date column and now stuff is really all over the place

Just wanted to chime in...

Jordan, why not allow manual manipulation of the progress notes? (ie. right click on procedure to bring up menu|up|down, or select procedure, hold down Ctrl+Up/Down) Even slicker, allow drag and drop to order the progress notes.

I have now documented the current behavior:
http://www.opendental.com/manual/showtabchart.html
Perhaps this annoying behavior began last year when we moved the procedure time into its own column.

Wondering what progress if any has been made in solving this issue? And if so, in what version?
I agree with Openwide, the first priority should be to put common things together. He is correct that it makes most sense to put the appointment at the top, then the procedures, then either the scripts or treatment plan. But if that isn't possible then at least bunch common things together.
I am on 7.9.17.
Today I tried to rearrange the order by assigning start times for each procedure. But that didn't work. The procedures are completely out of order. And two conditions are mixed in between the procedures instead of being grouped together. Here's what it looks like:

OK, so I reread the manual, and now I played around with assigning priorities to each procedure, and was able to get them to show in the correct order.

I guess the logic does make sense.
Order of Rows in Progress Notes
The Progress notes is a very complex grid with many different kinds of objects in it. Here is the current logic for the order in which the rows display:
1. All rows are sorted by date/time.
2. Within a group of procedures on the same date, the sorting is done by: priority, then tooth number, and finally procedure code.
This logic seems straightforward at first, but there are some complications.
A. Some row types do not have a time component, causing them to show as if 12am.
B. Procedure time is a separate column in the database which is currently ignored. This bumps procedures to the top.

I have now edited that page in the manual to include the planned changes to sorting behavior. I also put it on my personal task list to follow up on next week.

Planned sorting logic:
1. All rows sorted by date (but not time).
2. Within each date, rows sorted by type.
3. Within procedures of same date, sort by status, then priority, then tooth number, and finally procedure code.
Jordan,
This will be much improved.
Will this put the appt row above or below everything else? I'm guessing most users would prefer to have the appt list first, then the procedures, etc.

Implemented for version 12.0, but too dangerous to backport.

Any change to a version that offices are currently using is risky because it could introduce a bug. So we can't make this change in version 11.0 or version 11.1 because the risk outweighs the benefit.
