OT: Laptop broke

Post by savvy » Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:30 am

Greetings,
My laptop (IBM Lenovo Z60M) fell off the table and broke a hinge off from the screen over the weekend.
An error message immediately appeared on the screen, "System Security - IBM Embedded Security hardware tamper detected".
The computer will no longer boot up.
Internet searches seem to point to a chip not on the motherboard.
This is a 5 year old machine, but it has stuff on it I don't want to loose (of course no back up).
My thought is that I could remove the hard drive and use as a slave drive to copy from on a PC.
Is this reasonable?
Has anyone done this?
Any idea what kind of cable I need (I have not yet opened my machine)?
Or...should I just take the critter to a repair shop and have them try to copy over to a portable HD?
Thanks.

Cheers!!!

I'm guessing that if it is set up to detect hardware tampering, then it will also have an encrypted hard drive that you won't be able to pull out and copy. So I would say have someone fix it.

I have some Dells that have that feature. It can be deactivated in the Bios Setup. Look for a message on startup that says Press Fsomething to enter Bios Setup.

Thanks Jordan.
Jorge, thanks, but it won't get started to even get to that point.
I'll try to change that after I get it fixed.
Cheers!!
