Working my way through the trial and have some questions.

Post by jourdo » Tue Sep 27, 2011 6:32 pm

I just got my trial data conversion back today and I'm trying to get a basic set up running on my laptop. I am a current Dentrix user, who is hopefully going to remedy that very soon. I run Vixwin as my imaging software and it it bridged to Dentrix through VxLink. As far as I understand it, Dentrix assigns a patient a number and this is how Vixwin stores the data and links it. Is there an easy way to set up the bridge to run through Open Dental without causing too many problems? I was looking at the VxLink configuration file and wasn't sure if I need to make a change there, or set something up through Open Dental.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There's a lot of complicated info on that page, but I don't think most of it applies to you because you are using the bridged mode in both Dentrix and OD.

I read through that before posting and some of the techy stuff scared me into thinking it would be difficult to do. Turns out I was WAY wrong. I really thought there would be more to it than clicking a button. Very slick integration.

Few other questions:

1. I noticed something with the A/R report when comparing it to the Dentrix version. The amounts are right on Open Dental, but the dates are off. For example, I have some people who show on Dentrix as being in the 30 to 60 day range, but on Open Dental they show as 0 to 30. Again, the total amounts are right though.

2. I think this has to do with how the procedure codes are set up, but when I go to the chart none of the teeth have those beautiful blue/red paint on them. Everyone is showing a full set of teeth there as well (even when they show as missing in the progress notes). No fillings, root canals, nadda. Is this just something I need to go through and set up? Is it something that would happen in the proper data conversion?

EDIT: 3. Forgot this one... We love the fact that Dentrix will auto book the recall appointments for patients right when they are in. It seems that Open Dental says it can do it, but I am having some difficulty getting it to work. Maybe I am just having a special moment.

Love this product so far!

Thanks!

1. This might be because we actually measure the number of days, whereas Dentrix only increments the amounts once per month. For example, if today is the 28th, and the entry was made on the 29th of last month, we might have them in the 0-30 bucket, but Dentrix might have incremented them on the first of this month to be in the 30-60 bucket. It's very complicated. I wouldn't worry too much about that. One other possibility is that the conversion might have made certain adjustments as of a few days ago to get family balances corrected. So that might be pushing some of the aging forward.

2. When you go to the procedure codes list
http://www.opendental.com/manual/procedurecodes.html
are you seeing the full range of procedures, even ones you've never used? For example, D2410 gold foil or D2794 titanium crown. Make sure the "show hidden" checkbox is checked at the lower left and that all categories at the left are highlighted. If you can't find those procedure codes, then you may need to visit this page
http://www.opendental.com/manual/proced ... tools.html
or else we might need to do that as part of your conversion.

3. Yes, Open Dental certainly can. Might be a few settings or possibly a little training. You might call us for that one. I can't really help with it over the forum.

Well, I've jumped from the trial to the real deal. I'm running into a couple hiccups that I could use some help with.

The main on is trying to get Open Dental working on my laptop. I copied the database over from the server, but when I go to load the database on my laptop the program freezes and will not open. I'm running the same version at the office and home, but cannot get the home version working. I had not issues with the trial, but cannot get the real version working. Any ideas where I am going wrong here?

The other issue is getting claims to work. It seems to be an iTrans thing, and unfortunately their support is closed until at least Monday (depending if they are open on the Canadian holiday or not). I won't go into details, as I spent lots of time on the phone with support today and everything seems to be working on the Open Dental side.

This is why I wanted to get the home version working so I can fiddle with the settings instead of screwing up the work files.

At what point does it freeze? Are you in the Choose Database window?

We do have one person working from 7-11 on Saturday, so you could give us a call.

It freezes right when I choose the database. I can open the demo one fine, same with the default "opendental" one. When I select mine nothing happens. I have to close it with the task manager as it is stuck "not responding". I've even tried a total uninstall and reinstall of everything.

EDIT: Sorry I should clarify that I am able to choose the database, but when the splash screen pops up it gets stuck there.

Ah. Good. So it's choosing the db just fine and then getting stuck on something else. Sometimes, windows can show up underneath other windows. Use Alt-Tab to flip through your running programs and back to Open Dental again. This will ensure that the splash screen really is the top screen, and that the log in window is not hidden behind the main window. It could also be having an issue with the AtoZ folder path, although I have never seen this cause a lock up for more than about 30 seconds while it searches hopelessly for an AtoZ folder that does not exist. If it doesn't find the folder, a dialog is supposed to come up letting you pick a new one. Remember that this dialog could also come up behind the main window for some reason. So I still think it's a problem of a hidden window.
