Which Tablet?

After a lot of searching I am utterly stumped by which Tablet to get for handing out to patients for data entry and signing.

The IPAD would be obvious but cannot run Windows and hence OD.

In my knowledge mainstream Windows Tablets haven't really come of age. They are too big or too expensive. I liked some Chinese variants on Ebay but who knows how reliable they are and whether the Windows on them is Genuine. Strange that the Ipad should feel inexpensive but it does. The Wifi version is quite affordable compared to a good Windows tablet.

So the search continues...

You can help by nominating your favorite tablet for the job.

In an ideal world

1. Large screen 10.2" but thin.

2. Can run OD executable. I suppose that means Windows 7.

3. Can run antitheft software like Prey.

4. Docking station would be nice.

5. Stylus compatible for legal signatures. I suppose this is more an issue of finding the ideal stylus.

6. Good processor and RAM. Not a requirement for me but Windows 7 on an Atom processor can be slow.

7. Front facing Webcam for patient pictures.

8. Windows 7 Professional. I know this is not required by OD but it gives the option of joining a domain for other applications.

9. Bonus: Built in stylus holder.

dont forget minumum resolution 1024x768 . most smaller tablets dont have enough and some have enough in landscape mode but not portrait mode.

Jay - I am wondering the same thing. Some thoughts:

- I have had a motion LE1700 for about a year (bought used on ebay) but the windows xp interface is 'clunky' on a tablet, and the screen of this computer is not very bright. It works, but it's not satisfying.

- The Ipad will run an incredible app, DDS-GP which is a patient education program. But the Ipad cannot natively connect to an intra-oral camera. Apple does make a usb/sd card attachment, and I was wondering if there was a way of using a camera through this interface.

- I posted a message on Dentaltown asking if anyone had tried in Ipad with Logmein Igniton. This would allow you to run Open Dental trough another computer on the Ipad.

- Also, there will be a lot of new Windows 7 tablets coming to market soon, but they will have a tough time matching the Ipad's number of apps and its well thought-out interface.

@teethdood seems to have implemented something akin to LogmeIn. Maybe he would like to chip in with more details about the reliability and stability of his setup.

Bid is in - $445 plus $18 shipping - new in box Itronix hospital grade tablet; 2gb; Windows 7; 64 gb solid state drive; 1024x768 with two batteries and docking station. There are quite a few more available from the same seller. I think this will be a much faster, brighter tablet than the Motion LE 1700.

It won't run DDS-GP, but will take the IOC. Maybe I can run a reverse logmein igniton on my IPOD!

Well - as a tablet - I like it - it's fast and the screen is clear. Windows 7 works much better on a tablet than did XP tablet. It has 1024x768 resolution, so OD should work fine - I'm working on that right now. I have been trying to install my "made in China" IOC, but can't find the darn setup disk. so I am trying to port it over from another computer.

It still won't run DDSGP, but then an Ipad can't run Open Dental or and IOC.

I think once I get the thing setup I'll like it, but funny thing, every time I go to set it up these weird people with broken teeth get in the way.

DDS-GP is a very nice iPad app written by a dentist (see a pattern here!) that is used for demonstrating procedures to patients. It seems we as dentists are always attempting to find other uses for it. If you have a chance take a look at it.
