Unable to use DirectX tooth charting

Post by openwide » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:41 pm

Why can't I get DirectX tooth charting graphics to work?

I have a Dell Vostro 430 I7 proc,8GB RAM, 500 GB, 1GB video card running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and OpenDental version 7.6.22.0.

I have DirectX on the computer already and the installation recommended on OpenDental Help tells me what I have is newer. When I choose to use DirectX tooth chart it tells me "Please choose a different device format, the selected device format will not support the DirectX 3D tooth chart on this computer."

Any ideas?

It's probably your video card.

When I download DirectX it tells what I have is a newer version.

My video card is - 1GB NVIDIA GeForce® GT220 (DVI, VGA, HDMI)

I've always had trouble with the graphics settings in Open Dental. Currently I'm running all my computers with the Intel Core i3-530 Clarkdale. It has one of the best onboard video cards built into it that you can get before upgrading to a dedicated video card. It is more then enough to handle anything OD can do. When I run it on a motherboard with the H57 chipset the direct X works fine. When I run it on a motherboard with an H55 chipset OD doesn't allow any of the directX settings. By the way, both chipsets use the exact same onboard video and drivers. I spent hours trying to figure it out, but I gave up. I'm pretty sure my directx software is completely up to date and I even tried some of the benchmark softwares out there to make sure directX and the onboard video was functioning correctly. I can't really tell the difference between opengl anyway. Good luck, let us know what you figure out.

two computers with the i3-530 and the H57 chipset (directx works)
five computers with the i3-530 and the H55 chipset (directx doesn't work)
windows 7 32 bit

Go to Start Menu, put 'dxdiag' (without the quotes) in the search box at the bottom and hit enter.

Click the second button from the left at the bottom that says 'Run 64-bit DxDiag'. When it's done running click 'Save All Information'. Post the output from that file here.

Re: Unable to use DirectX tooth charting

There is a newer nVidia driver (8.17.12.6658) for your card that might fix the problem but I kind of doubt it. I'm tempted to say your card is underpowered, but on the one hand I have a GeForce 9800 GT on an HP Pavilion with 8 GB of RAM that doesn't work, while an integrated GeForce 9300 GS on a Sony Vaio does.

In general, though, I have had poor luck with DirectX and nVidia graphics cards (integrated or otherwise) on 64 bit machines and Windows 7. Direct X 9.0c would probably have worked for you but unfortunately DirectX is now a part of Windows 7 so it can't be uninstalled and downgraded.

It might be helpful for someone to start an HCL thread for systems/graphics cards that work and don't work with DirectX and OD. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful in your case.

Hold on a sec.

1) Go to nVidia website and install the latest *beta* driver for your card. The latest beta driver for your card should be v. 270.51 dated March 30, 2011
2) Download and install the DirectX SDK here --> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... b2df5abad4

That should fix your problem.

Wow. That's annoying. Did you reboot before trying again?

I have applied that fix to all our PCs and it has worked without exception. Here are the display adapters:

nVidia:
======
GeForce 6150 LE (integrated) - 32 bit PC
GeForce 8400GS
GeForce 9300 GS (integrated)
GeForce 9800GT

ATI:
=====
Radeon XPress 200 series (integrated)
Radeon 4600 series

Intel:
=====
Intel HD Core i3 (integrated)
Intel 82915G/GV/910 GL (integrated)

All of our PCs are running Windows 7 Pro and Open Dental 7.8.

Here's a link if you're considering a different video card for that PC:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 17580.aspx

If you're considering making a change, just make sure you get a card that the PSU can support, because it's only 350 W in that PC...

I did reboot. Cardinal rule with any microsoft software - when in doubt, reboot.

The only thing is that i did not do a fresh install of the beta driver fr nVidia. i updated. do you think that makes a difference?

Also the link for Direct SDK was from 2009????

Thanks for all the help

Well, you've gone this far, so you might as well try a fresh install, though I kinda doubt it will help. :mrgreen:

And yes, the 2009 DirectX SDK install seems to work just fine. There's a newer DirectX SDK here ---> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 8a3ba730ba so I suppose if you were really bored you could give it a try.

support.microsoft.com ( DirectX 9 Windows 10 )

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -june-2010

"S1023" error when you install the DirectX SDK (June 2010)
Symptoms
If you have an existing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable installed on your computer, you may receive an "S1023" error when you install the June 2010 DirectX SDK.
Cause
The issue occurs because a newer version of the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable is present on the computer. The June 2010 DirectX SDK installs version 10.0.30319 of the Visual C++ Redistributable.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, you must uninstall all versions of the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable before installing the June 2010 DirectX SDK. You may have one or more of the following products installed:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable
You can use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall the products. Or, you can run the following commands from an administrator command prompt:

MsiExec.exe /passive /X{F0C3E5D1-1ADE-321E-8167-68EF0DE699A5}
MsiExec.exe /passive /X{1D8E6291-B0D5-35EC-8441-6616F567A0F7}

After uninstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable products, you may install the June 2010 DirectX SDK.

After installing the June 2010 DirectX SDK, you may then reinstall the most current version of the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package.
More Information
The same issue can prevent installation of the Windows 7 SDK. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
