Tab Advance to Next Field in Forms

Post by jclaydds » Fri Jan 21, 2011 12:47 pm

I have been working the last couple of weeks on getting all of our forms set up in sheets, forms and webforms. As you might imagine, my custom patient registration form has lots of blanks for entering data. We plan to use this form in a Kiosk in reception area. The tab key does not behave as expected. When you tab from field to field, the cursor jumps to random fields all over the page in no particular order. The only way a patient would be able to fill out a form in the kiosk (or a staff member for that matter) would be to mouse click on the first field with the mouse, enter the data, mouse click on the next field, enter the data, etc.

Is there any way that the tab key could advance using the x and y axis data? For example, the tab would advance to the next field from left to right on the x axis and then drop down (y axis) to the next field and work left to right, etc.

Incidentally, when I upload the form to webforms and I am in a browser, the tab key will advance the cursor to the next field.

Yes, we're working hard on tab order.

Tab order works well on web forms. For in-office forms, it's been put on the back burner temporarily.

I'm also using it at the Kiosk, and it's a real pain-in-the-you-know-what to advance from field to field.

I'm trying to setup an exam sheet and am also struggling with the tab order. I setup over 200 fields, tested it and made note of what order it was tabbing through. Then I went back to shuffle things around so the tab order would be correct - but every time you save the sheet the tab order seems to randomly change! I don't see any workaround for this - even if I started from scratched and carefully created the fields in the order I wanted the tab sequence to go, it wouldn't matter. The exam sheet I created can't be used until this is fixed - wouldn't that make this a bug?

It's request 1545. Web forms is obviously an important area for us to continue development, so I wouldn't think it would be too much longer. We would have to do it before we could do fun stuff like imported medical history forms.
