Remote Offices

Post by parksjdp » Fri Sep 21, 2007 7:45 am

Anyone have any success stories on connecting 2 offices. We were quite disappointed with our connection to our remote office this week, our first week live. We use terminal services for all our workstations for Open Dental, but capture and view images locally. OD would freeze or be very slow via the terminal connection quite often, so we are looking at making some changes.

If we were to use OD at the remote office locally, we there be a way to sync the databases in the evening so that main location database would include all changes made at remote location the day before? Any other options that have worked?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Which version of OD are you running?

Have you tried turning off the 3D chart (File > Graphics > Use Simple Tooth Chart) to see if that improves performance?

There were some prior problems with the 3D chart over terminal sessions.

Cheers,

Switch to version 5.2 and turn off the appointment bubbles from Setup | Miscellaneous. TS can't keep up with the rapid graphics generated by the bubbles. Then your schedule will be much more usable. Which other screens are too slow?

I cannot think of any screens in particular, it just seemed sparatic. I think that my screen froze up a couple dozen times on Wed. So if I update to 5.2 and then turn off the bubbles, do I still need to change my graphics for the tooth chart?

Yes, those are both very easy changes to make, and should both be done for TS. Don't lose hope yet. There are a number of offices successfully using TS at remote locations.

If I make these changes at my remote office over a TS, will I have change them at the main office the next day and then remember to do it each time? Or will it be specific to each workstation and TS session?

The changes are stored in the database and are specific to each "computer". But remember that when you're using TS, all the computers think that they are the same one. So it really changes it for all computers at once. So making the changes over the TS will work fine.

Thanks Jordan

Then to update to 5.2, I would go to the server and update from there? Then all machines would update as they are opened? Is this correct?

You can go to the server if it's convenient. But version updates can actually be run from any location as long as all the other workstations are closed. Yes, it's fairly automated after that.
