Sold my dental practice

Post by jordansparks » Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:29 am

Today is a very very good day. I finally sold my dental practice. I had only been seeing patients out of one operatory a few days a week, but it was a distraction that was slowing me down. This greatly increases my productivity.

I would like to thank all of you for your support over the years in allowing us to get to this point.

Congratulations! It's amazing how much patients can slow you down  I think the future of OD will only get better.

Hmmm...looks like our subtle plot worked....

Congratulations! It would be a much easier profession if we didn't have to deal with the people!

No more malpractice - no more DEA registration - no more licensing fees - no more hazardous waste disposal fees - the list goes on and on.....

WE need a top ten list of things you won't miss about clinical dentistry!

My vote:
Gomer: "Hey Doc - howz it hangin', That filling you put in came out!"
Doc: "Who's this again?"
Gomer: "Doc, you gotta remember me - I wuz just in in 1999 - You came in on New Year's eve - Haw Haw! Anyways - you need to fix this filling. Got anything Friday afternoon at 5:00pm?"

Oh that stuff was no big deal. Now I instead have "errors and omissions" insurance, FDA and HIPAA, licensing fees for the procedure codes, expansion headaches, the list goes on and on.....
I will miss clinical dentistry. A lot. I just simply don't have time for it. I can do the greatest good for the greatest number of people by focussing on software.

Jordan -

Not to sound patronizing, but first, all of us would like to join in extending a big, "Thank You!" for all you have done, and are doing.

Second, I think that you may be right in more ways than you know. I have a bold prediction, but I think that I'll be proven correct. I believe that electronic medical records (universal and connected) will end up being one of the biggest public health boons since the advent of Penicillin. Already, in my little dental office, I have seen how errors are reduced, communication is increased and planning is enhanced. During the last year, my Dad required numerous hospitalizations and the difference between the facilities using the electronic records vs. paper records was striking. Decisions were clearer, history was not repeated, follow-up was better and errors were lessened. When I extrapolate this to medicine as a whole (including the gathering of statistics), it is mind-blowing.

Third, you are showing that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Cooperation oftentimes trumps competition. Dentists (and the population as a whole) have to understand that they can perform miracles if they take the initiative. They do not have to be beholden to a large corporation (or the government) for their services. The internet has remarkably made our world both bigger and smaller at the same time.

Ok - I'm off the soapbox. Thanks again to you, your family and your staff. Have a splendid weekend!

I second Dr Liftig. The economic model that most software exist in currently is outdated. The open source model has a far greater future. And congratulations on selling your practice.

Congratulations, Jordan
I moved from Mogo to OD back there in 2004-2005 since I need more than 4 fee schedules. Back then, when calling for support, you would talk to Jordan on his cell....even on Saturday/Sunday. That sounds a bit weird by now, but we can see how much OD has evolved. Thank you very much for your commitment to OpenDental.

Congratulations, Jordan. I bought straight out of school 2 years ago. Only survived 2 months with the existing MOGO PMS before going with OD. You've created something special. Keep up the good work.
