Open Dental on Mac

Post by dentexdg » Sat Feb 20, 2010 6:25 pm

Does OD work on Mac. We would like to purchase Apple iTablets. If doesn't work on Apple software are you looking to upgrade it in closer future so it can work with Apple? Thank you!

It only works on Mac when you are running it on Windows running on Mac. There are a number of users who use it in that way. There are a few different approaches to running Windows on Mac including VMware, Parallels, and Boot Camp. Open Dental won't run natively on Mac OS. It is unlikely that this will change in the forseeable future. We went down that path once a few years back. We decided that we could grow faster by focussing on Windows.

Dear Dr. Sparks,

We use OpenDental on a Mac platform with DEXIS, and it works flawlessly for us. I understand there is not much of a chance you will recode OD to work natively on MacOS X, BUT I would beg you to reconsider. I believe there is a large market for practice management software on a Mac platform, and OD would be the most competitively priced platform as well as the best package bar none. I really think you would be able to increase your subscriber base -- a little market research may prove this to be true. I would argue that the Mac platform is inherently more stable, and a larger market base should be welcome.

Cheers

What about Fusion? Will Open Dental run on a mini-Mac running Fusion/Windows XP Professional?
Fusion is much like Parallels in that Windows and the Mac OS run simultaneously on the same machine.

Right. VMware Fusion is a good option. No guarantees, but I don't forsee problems.

I, too, would like to voice my vote for Mac support. I was wondering if a hybrid approach might not satisfy some of us. To that end, I am setting up an intranet web site to do things like present the appointment schedule in a browser. If anyone is interested, please give me a call.
