Security Issue with Deposits

Post by Rickliftig » Mon Jan 26, 2009 1:53 am

I realized last night (while lying awake obsessing) that it is possible to change the account number on a deposit ticket from within the deposit window. It seems that this would be a way to divert money if you were not looking closely at the deposit ticket routing number.

When the name on an account is the same as the name on the check, a stamp on the back of the check is sufficient. If a staff person wants to deposit a check that's made out to you, they would have to forge your signature on the back. And banks tend to look at third party checks much more closely. They might get away with it once or twice, but it's high risk for them. It's an obvious way to try to scam, and the banks are very aware of that. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised it they would require a fingerprint to cash it.

That makes sense Jordan. But the dialog box could still be altered by accident. So should it be editable at all from the Deposit slip window?

Is it possible to add a check count column next to each check
and the total # of checks at the bottom next to the total deposit dollar amount?

This would make it a easier to reconcile the # of cks in the deposit with the printed deposit.
(especially useful when there are a lot of checks.)

By the way, a few years ago, we had some mail 'lost'.
Several checks were cashed in a small convenience store in a different town.

The banks apparently didn't look too closely at the signitures or at least not in this case.
Interestingly enough, when we got copies of the forged checks,
the bank did nothing but we contacted the insurance companies and got several of the checks reissued.
Still not sure how that worked, but it did.

Good ideas Yorek. It would also be nice to have Name Address and phone added to the slip also (though not absolutely necessary)

That convenience store had to reimburse the bank, I believe.

My bank won't accept OD deposit slips alone...

Post by savvy » Tue Jan 27, 2009 3:29 pm

I need to use a normal preprinted deposit slip, date it, write "batch" with the total amount.
The OD slip is the "batch" itemization.

The bank says that they can not use the OD slip alone because it does not have the "special printing" of the routing and account numbers on it which can be read by their machines.
The account number in standard font is not good enough.

Savvy -

The Code for MICR is available - take a look at the appropriate section in OD help.

Yes, but it's still not magnetic ink and still not in exactly the correct place on the page.
