Credit card merchants

Post by fishdrzig » Wed Oct 29, 2008 2:25 am

Is anyone using another credit card merchant besides Xcharge with OD? I ask only because it would be much more simple to keep the one I have.
Or is Xcharge the only one that works with OD?

You can keep the one you have; it will just require a few extra keystrokes to enter the amount into both systems. Not that big of a deal.

We have a merchant for the medical dept that we would like to use for OD. How do we coordinate that in open dental, so that it shows that patient paid using credit card?

You enter the credit card payment into your merchant portal like normal. Then go to patient account in Open Dental, click payment button, choose 'credit card' from payment type (or you could call us to show you how to add new payment type if you want to track this type of transaction seperately) and enter the amount, create pay splits as needed, click OK.

I use a local vendor run by one of my patients.

The main reason I switched was that he offered me "pass through" or "interchange plus pricing". This was very enlightening. Most vendors offer "Tier Pricing" which bundles rates. They usually advertise a low 1.6% rate which is only one tier. The problem is you get nailed with the other tiers. The "pass through" pricing charges you only the bank rate plus points (which you negotiate).

Bottom Line: I changed about 6 months ago and it saved me about 40-50% which for my office is thousands. I recommend you do some research and even ask your current vendor. They seem to get squeemish when you say "pass through pricing"
