Trial Version

Post by michelin » Sat Jan 04, 2014 9:06 pm

Hello,
Just uploaded the trial version 12-4-41.exe. It is supposed to contain a few patients but I can't find them. Am I missing something?

I put in some mock data to try out some queries. I noticed that one of the favorite queries called "Table - Coverage Patient" contains a table 'covpat' that no longer exists. It looks like the table 'covpat' no longer exists and may have been replaced with a table called 'benefit.' Should the favorites query be updated?

Also I need a little help with selecting the correct ODBC driver and getting connectivity to Opendental using Excel. (I am testing everything on a home computer and would like to try out the ODBC connection to Excel). I have Windows 7, Microsoft 2010 (suite), 64-bit operating system.

From the specified link, I selected: Windows (x86, 64-bit), MSI Installer 5.2.6 3.8M
Download

Everything seemed to connect just fine but I can't access the Opendental (datasource) using the Excel Microsoft Query wizard. It won't allow me to see any Opendental files in the wizard browser. Do you know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks so much for any tips.

The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the driver and the application

Thank you for any help,

You most likely loaded up the blank database that people use to start new practices with. You should choose the "demo" database when you are prompted to select a database to connect to:

I checked all the way back to v4.4 and there never has been a covpat table. I'll load up the trial edition soon and try to see what the query is trying to do. My guess without seeing it at all would be it's trying to create a temporary table called covpat.

I've never owned Excel so I can only help you so much. I'm not quite sure what ODBC driver you installed nor am I familiar enough with the connector to know if correct versions are a huge deal. With that said, I'd recommend you check out our ODBC page in our manual for helping users get mail merge to work for Word:

Very strange about the Coverage Patient query. I'll have it removed with the next trial release. I'm not sure why there are so many query favorites showing how you can select all rows from a table. We have over 200 tables in the db and I feel five or less examples can drive the message home about being able to do a "select *" on them. If you're ever interested in other tables in our schema or how they are commonly used together, I'd recommend checking out these two pages in our manual:
(Database Documentation / SQLyog sections)

Thank you Jason!

I can't try your solutions at this moment, but hope to try them later! I am happy to see a response! Thank you!

As far as covat goes, in the version 7.5.1 documentation:

"benefit
Corresponds to the benefit table in the database which replaces the old covpat table. "

from this link: http://opendental.com/OpenDentalDocumen ... ml#benefit

I got the above link from a current Open Dental user.

Thanks again. I will report back later with my success or failures,

Michelin :)

Hi Jason,

It turns out that the version of the ODBC driver is a huge deal (at least for the trial version). I installed the 3.5.1 version and it works great! I am able to open the OD database and download tables directly into Excel. It's great! You may want to specify this in the manual, if it is indeed necessary to use the older version SQL ODBC with OD.

Thank you for your help,

Michelin :D
PS I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling the trial version yet to see if I can get the trial patients. I assume I will get the blank dbase again as I had simply followed the instructions after clicking on the link provided on the Open Dental website (I assumed I did this correctly). I am not confidant that un/reinstalling will make a difference other than eliminating the mock data that I have already entered. Your thoughts would be appreciated (if you have time to entertain this quandry). Thank you.

The 'opendental' database that comes with the trial does not have patients loaded.
The 'demo' database is set up with patients, insurance, providers etc. Select demo for the database from the dropdown when you open the program and get the Choose Database window.

Thank you Arna,

I misunderstood what Jason was telling me (I thought I had to reinstall in order to get the demo option).

I see now!

Thanks!

Michelin :)
