Direct X tooth charting continues fail despite upgrade.

Post by Jay » Tue Apr 19, 2011 1:47 pm

Help. Have Optiplex but installed Radeon HD5450 with 1Gb Ram with latest drivers and latest Direct X 11. Same message, "Please choose a different device format, the selected device format will not support the DirectX tooth chart on this computer." At this point my Optiplex is resembling a mini gaming rig. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Direct X tooth charting continues fail despite upgrade.

Direct X works great for me on all kinds of nVidia gforce cards 6200, 8200, 8400, 8600, 9800...winXP 32bit, Win7 64bit, and Win7 32bit

Did you make sure any integrated graphics chip is disabled on your motherboard in the BIOS?

Why not just use OpenGL? The only difference is that the outlines of the teeth will be a little bit pixelated. It's no big deal.

You are right, we will. It's not a big deal at all. But just for the record we installed the entire Direct X 11 SDK and tried both options in the BIOS for the onboard controllers and it didnt work.

Oh, that's right. I think most of the complaints are for ATI cards. Maybe you could pop an nVidia card into one of your machines to get the perio graphics.

Hmm. I didn't realize there were any significant problems with DirectX. I think we have around 40 computers, and it works on all of them as far as I know. On the other hand, I might not notice if some of ours weren't set up for DirectX. Maybe I'll have someone go around and see if there are any without DirectX.

I have about 25 computers and Direct X works on all of them fine...including the cards listed above....so I wonder what the problem actually is? It is not the specific hardware mentioned, it must be a software problem somewhere....the question is where?

This:
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: OptiPlex 380
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A01
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.9GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Seems to me to be a fairly new, main-stream machine. I am quite surprised that adding an nVidia card does not make the DirectX work. Just to confirm, you tried all of the steps here http://www.opendental.com/manual/graphics.html including the latest DirectX SDK? We might try purchasing that machine or its current Dell equivalent for our next PC purchase, otherwise, hard to troubleshoot since we have no such problem. I would remember to focus on it as a DirectX issue, not just an Open Dental issue. If DirectX works, so will Open Dental's graphics (from our experience). Most interesting is that since Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11 preinstalled, this is somewhat of a contradiction. DId your machine come with Windows7 or did you upgrade later?

*Other than my last post above, I would note that I have seen situations where some display modes did not allow directX to work properly. I have even had an adjustment of the refresh rate (from 60hz to 70hx I think) 'make' directx work.
**I would try put the display in native mode (highest resolution possible with default refresh rate) and try again.

1. To clarify I have only tried the onboard graphics card which is Intel GMA 4500 and ATI RADEON HD5450 which is a powerful gaming card with 1GB video RAM. I have not tried any NVIDIA card.

2. I followed all your instructions and installed both the latest Direct X 11 runtime and SDK from Microaoft's website.

3. I rebooted numerous times and tried disabling the onboard video controller.

4. Windows 7 came preinstalled. I tried with and without SP1 and with all latest critical and recommended updates installed.

5. The screen resolution is set to the LCD monitor's native resolution.

oooook im an idiot.

DirectX works on the 8600GTS.

When I was picking DirectX I wasnt manually selecting a format in the list below.

Integrated graphics, my ATi cards, and the 8400GS still dont work.

We will try and purchase a similar machine for our next desktop workstation, this might not be in time for you, so you probably should try an nVidia card (keep receipt in c ase it does not work). Call me once you have the card if it seems to not work and you are on support and I can try various modes. It really just should work, but we cannot troubleshoot since we do not have the machine, you could ship it to us to troubleshoot, but that is probably not practical. It would be cheaper to get a card.

DirectX not working here either. All Dell Optiplex machines with ATI Radion HD 3450.
To tell you the truth OpenGL looks just fine. Charts are not pixelated.
