I went ahead and fixed the particular section of Database Maint that was failing for you. There might be more so I'm installing a Linux box to do some testing, but since you seem to be compiling feel free to do an svn update and recompile (11.1.5 alpha) and hopefully that was the only issue with DBM.

Because I have a linux server I can't follow the upgrade path through 5.0 as described in the manual.
I did a test datadump out of 4.1 and restored to 5.5 seems to work fine. Before I trust it am I missing something?

... learning curve for security issues. The pain will be less if you have used Vista very much. It will certainly be less painful than doing it in Linux. It is not guaranteed to play nicely with WinXP, but then again, neither is Linux.

XVlite technically doesn't need a server, but simply installed on a host that is accessible to the other peers (makes sense to have it on the computer that hosts mysql). I was even able to install xvlite on a linux host (using wine) but any update could easily break this configuration.

We did change to a newer version of the MySQL connector. That's the program that connects Open Dental to the database. So the behavior is sometimes a little different. Are you using Linux for your mysql server? What version of mysql?

If you use Linux, it's easy to set a server variable in your my.ini file so that it will no longer be case sensitive. Then, if we let a capitalization issue through, you won't be affected.

I solved the problem. Capitalization standards were not followed in the new insplan changes. This showed up only on a Linux server of course since windows doesn't care. I just did a replacement for the whole word "insSub" with "inssub" and all the 114 or so replacements made corrected ...

Yes but I didnt tell you guys how to get 7.4.4 to run... but its still in beta so I will wait for it to be stable... You shouldnt be running 7.4.4.. be sure you have direct rendering enabled with opengl and linux... glxinfo is the command..

Pretty sure I just got this working without VMWare, etc... I am testing in VMWare and right now I am in linux and Open Dental detects my DirectX and OpenGL... give you a hint.. not using Mono..... Time to take this out of VMWare..

Biggest advantage of a web version is that you can use it on any device.............Windows, Mac, Linux, Your mobile phone, iPad...basically anything you haven't even thought of...you could use Open Dental if it were in a web browser.

You could separate the application stack even more by running two Linux VMs, one for the database server, and the other for the folders. Then keep you web services on the Windows box. This provides good database security and protects it from IIS a bit better.

We phased out Linux for workstations a long time ago. I think my comments were that we don't plan on returning to try that again. Linux will, of course, continue to work fine for the database server if the user wishes. But we won't encourage it due to difficulties supporting it remotely.

The one thing that I always notice in flamewars like this is that people forget is that there is always lock in, in one way or another. Software written for Linux can depend on POSIX forking and pipe behavior and all sorts of Unixy weirdness.

as far as I know the latest versions cannont run in linux (and if you are trying you should just compile an older linux compatible version v5.6 or less in windows and copy over the files). Unless you are going to try to fix it that is the last working version.

I will try compiling. I never had luck with precompiled windows executable. One time it would not take / for path so I could not use shared images folder on windows machine, these days it fails to start, complaining about cups printing (asking for it even though it is there).

Some sort of security issue with the manifest file on the server? This may be a good enough reason to switch to a Windows 'file server' or an embedded Linux NAS so that you don't have to deal with permission issues. I don't know.

any windows version 98, XP, Vista, Win7 will work. There is really no requirement (although I agree, never vista!). mySQL just has to install. I use ubuntu linux. Works great and never goes down.

Remember that if you go with a linux server there is always, ALWAYS the disadvantage of... A server is no good when it cant "serve" out the info to workstations. If the network switch goes down, then the server cannot talk to worstations. ...

Thats the beauty of open dental you can make any workstation act as a backup server. Just install mysql on it and turn off the service. backup the data whenever you want . If the main server goes to crap .... turn on the service and your up and running. Some other ideas. You can rsync data home ever...

Tables do not need to be locked before backing up. I did that for a few years, but then gradually stopped. I haven't locked tables for about 4 years now, and I have never had a corrupt backup. Have you considered using a table of static images for the tooth chart? Rotations, etc. would require different images but I don't think you would need too many.

The 3D tooth chart never did work on Linux due to limitations of Mono. The Mono team took many more years than they promised to build the framework. We basically got tired of waiting for them and moved on to greener pastures. Haven't even tried ...

Can anyone tell me if OpenDental runs on Linux out of the box. I tried to install it on a CentOS 5.3 box and got all kinds of errors dealing with MONO. It is not well documented anywhere on this site how to do this nor is it in the manual. Does anybody provide this service for a fee.

You will wait for the primary claim to come back, edit your estimates, and then send a copy of the primary eob with the secondary claim. This means paper mail, or electronic attachments.

Don't check the box for multiple paths. Just use the "override path for this computer". If you put that path in a file explorer outside of OD, does it bring up your images? I think your path is wrong. In Setup, Computer, you will see a few extra machines. That's harmless. I think you can even delete...

I ended up with emdeon on windows XP machine to avoid any complications. (And finger pointing ;-) ) I have managed to open just the port for emdeon while still blocking web surfing and e-mail to outside world from that computer. It is working fine. ... that is a cluster with file replication. Shared Storage can be even more expensive... depending if the shared storage is redundant or not. With Linux, the cost is just 2 Servers, and labor. No software to buy. So its more around $3000.00 without the IT guy.
