turn off mysql on server 2

do a simple file copy from server 1 to server 2, I use Karens replicator to do automatic backups.

Once a week I turn on mysql on server 2 and make sure the database is up to date by running OD.

I am perfectly happy paying the support fee to keep support as is. It is in all of ours best interest to keep the revenue stream sufficient for continued development . Good support has become one of the hallmarks of Open Dental and is worth a few dollars.

The big limitation with photo storage in OD is that it lacks the ability to group them. So if you don't take too many photos and don't mind all of them going in one folder then OD is ok. But if you want to have them grouped either by date or function then look at a 3rd party program.

We did the same thing except we use the document feeder on our network laser printer. We setup a shared printer on one of the workstations with properties set to the proper paper size and bin.

It would seem to me that for those who still have written records

Inactive are those who are not expected to return but whose file is still stored in the main record store

archived are those whose records have been removed from the main record store and are now reside in the basement.

we are pretty much paperless. I say pretty much because we have them fill out medical histories and the like on laminated forms with an erasable pen then scan them in it is fast,easy, and inexpensive. I looked into the kiosk , idea seemed to be more work than it was worth ... for my practice anyway....

I used it for a year and it worked fine. Image quality was as good or better than Dr. Suni. I switched because no FMS. It's easier to use than dr.suni fewer clicks and I hope that someday finishing it becomes a priority.

Because I have a linux server I can't follow the upgrade path through 5.0 as described in the manual.

I did a test datadump out of 4.1 and restored to 5.5 seems to work fine. Before I trust it am I missing something?

Now don't laugh but this will show most anything will work. Server - linux server setup in 2004 runs redhat 2? I can't remember the specs but it was a strong machine 6 years ago. I think I found a bug in the printing of lab slips. If one prints the lab slip right away everything is fine. If one brings up a previously entered lab slip and tries to print ... it prints an older one. Example: I input a new script for having teeth set for a full denture but didn't print it. Later...

I have no problem printing 1/4 sheets. If your printer will print envelopes then it will print any size media. The printer I have is an okidata that has a media tray. We then have a shared windows network printer dedicated to 1/4 sheets. All computers point here.

I use Karens Replicator, truecrypt ,Mysql Administrator, and CrashPlan for off site backups

DropBox to transfer files home.

tinyPDF to make a readable copy of ortho txPlans from Cephx for storage in OD

Wife uses Quickbooks for financials ( I agree this could have closer integration )

I think what he means is new a column in the progress notes for wire size and another column for elastics etc the autonotes work reasonable well for and the like but there are too many possible wire combinations for wires. I draw bracket, wires, ocs, elastics in the chart and save a copy each visit....

we use mysqladmin for automatic scheduled datadump/backups. This is a free download from mysql. It puts all the data in 1 file which can be restored if needed.

Thats the beauty of open dental you can make any workstation act as a backup server. Just install mysql on it and turn off the service. backup the data whenever you want . If the main server goes to crap .... turn on the service and your up and running. Some other ideas. You can rsync data home ever...

One thing about the datadump with mysqladmin.

If the database changes through a version change ie: new tables ...... you have to edit your backup schedule to include the new tables

I use suni with od and like it better than the supplied software because it is easy, fast and after I learned the exposure I get good images. I think there are better sensors. I also hope that he finishes it so we can have custom mounts.

With 5 pc's there is no need for a dedicated server. Setup one of the pc's with mysql and use it as the server. I think putting data, crypted or not, on a removable drive is asking for trouble. Just too easy to lose or steal. The online backup services are so good and inexpensive there is no reason to take the chance. As for me we use mozy for offsite and also rsync to get a copy home to check the data for us...

I don't think it makes that much difference what you buy. Reliability would be a plus. Dell has 4 hour service which may be important. As for Raid ... I think you need a well thought out disaster plan .... on and off site backups etc ... Raid drives most likely would be a part if it. OD is wonderful...

it does not work on computers with an older dual monitor nvidia card. It happens to be the same cards that have caused me errors when I first installed OD. When I called support a year ago they reconfigured OD and told me what the problem was that was over my head.

You will not be running OD on a dedicated server so the fact that OD is a windows program is not an issue. If all you want is BW and PA's I suggest a suni sensor and use OD directly. Direct capture w/OD works quite well. Image quality is as good or better than what I get w/ Apteryx. You can't do Full Mouths yet.

Required or not I think it is a good idea. We had a couple of people in our area that were getting scripts for pain meds and altering the # and refills. I now call in all my pain meds. We have a responsibility to do what we can and using alter-proof paper is a small price to pay.

I have the same trouble with the plastic covers ripping. I took the sensor holders they sent me and trimmed the prongs so they are not as tight. Now they snap on instead of sliding on. Much better but not perfect.

I got my sensor off e-bay for $4200 which was new in a sealed box with one copy of the European (in english) version of the software. I assume they have a different pricing structure for Europe.

Yes it has a nice scheduled backup tool that takes some time to learn as the docs lead a little bit to be desired. It dumps it into an asci file which I don't completely trust . But I will say it has always restored at home.

why not use mysqladministrator to do a scheduled backup then backup these files to mozy? It will momentarily shut down mysql then backup into one file. we have 7 schedules m-f and a monthly and a noon so I always have 7 sets of different data backed up.

I might add linux is only broken if you are going to use it on a workstation. Using linux for your server works exceptionally well.

As for the workstations I have found that running OD in VM-windows/ubuntu works well.

What OS are you using for your server? If you are using XP.... you can map the backup folder then burn the disk from the workstation. I am not overly comfortable with burned CD's as my only backup. In the Tx plan module it would save alot of clicks if we could right click on a procedure producing a pulldown menu to set the priority.

quick note

I tried to add some new quick notes today .

They show in the menu and I can use them from there but when I try to do the ?xxx thing the new ones don't work. The old ones are fine.

There are some insurances that want to see a charge each month. For these we use the repeating charge feature. This will put a charge on a specific day of the month for a specified number of months. Payments are made as any other payment.

when I try and install the modified mono into ubuntu 6.10 I get dependency errors for libmono-system 2.0-cil and libmono2.0-cil

It seems 1.0 is installed not 2.0 and when I try and install them I get a whole boatload more dependencies problems

any ideas

I too have just signed up and haven't used them yet. The sign-up was easy and friendly. The fees they quoted me are 1.77% - 1.87% depending on the card plus $10 a month
