Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. If the pulp becomes damaged through injury or disease and cannot repair itself, bacteria can leak into the pulp and cause the pulp to die. If a root canal procedure is not performed and pulp inflammation is left untreated, an abscess can form at the tip of the root and cause considerable pain. Even if there is no pain, the bone anchoring the tooth in the jaw can be damaged.
To treat a root canal, the dentist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the canal, a channel inside the root, then fills and seals the space. Afterwards, a crown or other restoration may be recommended to protect and restore the tooth. After the restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
I understand that in an effort to avoid extraction of the above tooth(teeth), endodontic treatment has been recommended. I have been explained the inherent and potential risks/side effects of the proposed treatment.
• I understand that treatment may require several appointments and that the results of the endodontic treatment, while anticipated to be satisfactory, cannot be guaranteed in any way.
• I understand that complications can occur from endodontic treatment.
• I understand that my tooth may be lost in spite of all efforts to save it and may be extracted at a later time.
• I understand that the filling used to treat a root canal may extend through the tooth impeding the success of the treatment.
• I understand that additional surgical procedures like apicoectomy, a surgical endodontic procedure, may be necessary following root canal treatment.
• I understand that root canal therapy does not restore the tooth and that a filling or crown after completion of the root canal procedures is necessary. I also understand that if a root canal treatment is exposed to the oral environment without some kind of barrier, it can fail within days.
